Goods from the east, like silk, met goods from the west, like cotton. This exchange made the kingdom very wealthy and important. The people there were part of a sophisticated culture.

Archaeologists have found many clues about the people of Loulan.

They found mummies known as the Tarim mummies. One female mummy was about 3,800 years old. These people had fair hair and light skin. Some were even over six feet tall.

Scientists used genetic analysis to study them. They found these people might have come from the Eurasian Steppe. This tells us how humans moved across the world long ago.

History shows that Loulan was often caught in big conflicts.

The Tarim River once provided water for the people. Around 330 CE, the river changed its course. Without enough water, the town of Loulan was abandoned. The people had to move to other places. By the time a traveler named Xuanzang visited in 644, the area was empty.
