He was born in 1645 in Quebec. As a boy, he lived near many First Nations people. Because of this, he learned their languages. He also learned to play the organ and the harpsichord. Later, he left his studies to trade furs.

In 1673, Louis went on a big trip. He traveled in canoes with a priest named Jacques Marquette. They wanted to find the upper parts of the Mississippi River. They traveled through forests and marshes. They even carried their canoes over land to reach new rivers.

They found that the Mississippi River flows into the Gulf of Mexico. On the way back, they found a path to Lake Michigan. Louis went home to tell people about his trip. He lost his notes when his canoe flipped over. He had to write his story from memory.

Louis also sailed to Labrador. He wrote a detailed study of that coast. Many places have his name today. This includes the city of Joliet, Illinois.
