She is celebrated for her unconventional approach to pop music. Her songwriting is often described as introspective, meaning she looks inward to explore personal feelings. This style sets her apart from many mainstream artists. She uses her music to examine themes like teenage life and culture. Through her unique sound, she has connected with audiences across the entire globe.

Lorde's ability to write lyrics grew from a deep love of reading. She studied various genres to learn how to structure her thoughts. Authors such as J. D. Salinger and Janet Frame served as major influences. She even studied short fiction to master the art of putting words together. As a young child, she joined a drama group to build public speaking skills. Later, she worked with a vocal coach for one year to refine her singing. These early steps built the foundation for her professional career.

Her professional path began with local success in Auckland. In 2009, she won a talent show alongside her friend Louis McDonald.

This performance led to her being signed by Universal Music Group (UMG). In 2011, she began a vital partnership with producer Joel Little. They worked at Golden Age Studios to record five songs in only three weeks. This collaboration resulted in The Love Club EP. She originally released this EP for free on SoundCloud in 2012.

Lorde achieved massive global fame through her single "Royals." This song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It remained at the top of that chart for nine weeks. The single sold 10 million units worldwide. This achievement made it one of the best-selling singles of all time. At age 16, she became the youngest artist to top the U.S. charts since 1987. Her success helped launch her debut studio album, Pure Heroine, in 2013.

Pure Heroine explored the feelings of suburban teenage life. The album was a major commercial success in the United States. By February 2014, it had sold over one million copies there.

Her second studio album, Melodrama, was released in 2017.

She produced this album mainly with Jack Antonoff. Melodrama focused on the intense emotions of heartbreak and adolescence. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200. It also reached the top spot in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Critics praised the album for its emotional weight. It was even ranked on the Rolling Stone list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time."

Lorde has earned numerous prestigious accolades throughout her career. She has won two Grammy Awards and two Brit Awards. In her home country, she has received twenty Aotearoa Music Awards.

As her career progressed, Lorde continued to experiment with different musical styles. Her 2021 album, Solar Power, explored indie folk and psychedelic sounds. This project received mixed reactions from both critics and listeners. For her fourth album, Virgin, released in 2025, she worked with musician Jim-E Stack. This project marked a return to electronic-based pop music.
