Lookism is a type of unfair treatment based on how a person looks. It happens when people judge others by their physical appearance instead of their actual character. This can include guessing if someone is smart or capable just by seeing them. Lookism can happen in many places, like at work or in social groups. It can even affect how people find romantic partners. Some people call the positive side of this "pretty privilege." This is when being attractive brings extra benefits to a person.

This way of thinking often follows specific patterns in our society. Many people believe in a stereotype called "what is beautiful is good." This means attractive people are often seen as more positive or competent. Research shows that being attractive can act like a "beauty premium" in certain jobs. This happens most in roles that require talking to many people. In other jobs, being attractive might not change much at all. Some studies even show that wearing facemasks can help level the playing field. This helps make things more equal for all workers.

People have worried about judging by looks for a very long time. Ancient philosophies and religions often warned against placing too much value on appearance. Some thinkers believed that looking only at the outside could be deceptive. The specific word "lookism" became much more popular in the 1970s. It grew during the fat acceptance movement to describe discrimination. In 1978, The Washington Post Magazine used the term to talk about this issue. Today, the word is found in many major English dictionaries.

Scientists have found many interesting facts about how we see faces. Studies show that human infants as young as 14 hours old prefer looking at attractive faces. Even some animals, like cats, show a preference for certain looks. In dating, research by Dan Ariely found that height can play a role. He found that shorter men might need to earn much more money to be seen as equally attractive. For example, a 5'4" man might need to earn $229,000 more than a 6' man. These numbers show how much appearance can influence how people are judged.

Lookism also shows up in important areas like politics and leadership. In the United Kingdom, cartoons have often mocked the looks of politicians. In the United States, people thought appearance played a role in the 1960 debate between Kennedy and Nixon. Some researchers found that attractive candidates might get more votes in certain elections. Women in power often face extra scrutiny regarding their hair or clothes. For instance, Madeleine Albright faced comments about her appearance while serving as Secretary of State. This can make it harder for leaders to focus on their important work.
