The island is a special place for nature. It sits near the Wallace Line. This is a line that divides different types of animals. To one side are animals from the Indomalayan region. To the other side are animals from Australasia. The island is part of the Lesser Sundas deciduous forests.

A huge volcano sits in the center of Lombok.

This volcano is named Mount Rinjani. It is the second-highest volcano in all of Indonesia. On top of the volcano, there is a crater lake. The lake is called Segara Anak, which means "child of the sea." A park called Gunung Rinjani National Park protects this area. In 2010, a small cone called Gunung Barujari erupted inside the lake. This eruption sent ash into the sky. The ash fall even damaged crops on the mountain slopes.

Long ago, the island was ruled by many small states. Each state had its own Sasak prince. In the 1600s, the Balinese people took control of the west. Later, the Dutch visited the island in 1674. They made a treaty with a Sasak princess. In 1894, there was a big conflict between the Sasak and the Balinese. The Dutch sent a large army to the island. By 1895, the Dutch ruled the entire island.

In July and August of 2018, big earthquakes hit the island. The August quake had a magnitude of 7.0. It caused much damage in North Lombok. Many buildings were broken and many people were hurt. Water can also be a problem for people living there. The southern and central areas often face water shortages. This happens because of growing populations and damage to the forests.
