Liu Xiang is a famous runner from China. He ran the 110-meter hurdles. This is a race where runners jump over blocks.

Liu was very fast. In 2004, he won a gold medal at the Athens Olympics. This was the first men's Olympic gold for China in athletics. He also set an Olympic record with a time of 12.91 seconds. Liu was a world champion too.

He wanted to show that Asian runners could be the best in the world.

Running was hard for Liu because of injuries. He had a problem with his Achilles tendon. This is a cord of tissue in the foot. In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, he had to stop his race. In the 2012 London Olympics, he hurt his foot at the very first hurdle.

He tried to heal for two years. He said his heart wanted to race, but his foot said no. Liu retired in 2015. He is still a hero to many people. He even gave money to help after the Sichuan earthquake.
