He is widely recognized for his ability to bridge the gap between complex scientific concepts and accessible literature. His work often focuses on the majesty of science and technology. Liu uses the genre of science fiction to share the "beauty" of the universe with a general audience. He believes that literature can serve as a pathway for those who lack specialized scientific knowledge. Through his writing, he explores how humanity fits into the vastness of the cosmos.

Liu employs a specific literary approach known as "sci-fi realism." This theory focuses on the evolution of science fiction in relation to real-world scientific growth. In this style, writers attempt to ground imaginative or unbelievable ideas in a sense of reality. Liu aims to avoid making science fiction purely about human experiences. Instead, he places a heavy emphasis on technology and scientific development. He views the universe as a place where human morality may pale in significance compared to cosmic forces. This perspective allows him to explore themes like ecological limitations and social inequality.

His most influential work is the Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy. The first novel in this series, The Three-Body Problem, was published in 2006. The story follows Ye Wenjie, who intercepts an intergalactic signal. This action leads to an encounter with an alien species known as the Trisolarans. The trilogy explores the consequences of this contact and the eventual destruction of Earth. The series has achieved massive commercial success. In China alone, The Three-Body Problem sold 1,200,000 copies before its international recognition.

Liu's career is marked by several prestigious international literary honors. In 2015, he became the first author from Asia to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel. This award was granted to the English translation of The Three-Body Problem by Ken Liu. He also won the 2017 Locus Award for his third volume, Death's End. Additionally, he has received the Chinese Nebula Award and is a nine-time winner of China's Galaxy Award. These accolades have helped establish his reputation as a major figure in global science fiction.

Liu's personal history includes a childhood shaped by significant social changes in China. He was born on June 23, 1963, in Beijing. He grew up in Yangquan, Shanxi, where his parents worked in the mines. Due to the Cultural Revolution, he lived in Luoshan County, Henan, at his ancestral home. He later graduated from the North China University of Water Conservancy and Electric Power in 1988. Following his studies, he worked as a computer engineer at a power plant in Shanxi. This technical background likely influenced his commitment to "hard" science fiction.

His narratives often explore the concept of posthumanism. This theme examines how humanity changes when faced with overwhelming extraterrestrial technology. In his books, the Trisolarans represent a force that challenges anthropocentrism, or the idea that humans are the center of the universe. Liu uses these interactions to reflect human faults, such as authoritarianism and competition. He also uses his stories to offer subtle political criticism. For example, his novel China 2185 uses a utopian democratic setting to contrast with the authoritarian environments he experienced in the 1980s.

Beyond books, Liu's stories have been adapted into various media formats. A Netflix series based on his trilogy was released on March 21, 2024. His short story The Wandering Earth was adapted into a film that became a major box office success in China. Another adaptation, the comedy film Crazy Alien, grossed over 2.2 billion at the box office. These adaptations demonstrate the wide reach of his ideas across different cultures and platforms. Liu's work continues to prompt discussions about the relationship between human society and the scientific future.
