The story is partly about Alcott's own life and her three sisters.

The March sisters live in Massachusetts during the American Civil War. Their father is away serving as a chaplain for the Union Army. Because they have lost much of their money, the family lives in genteel poverty. The sisters work hard to help their mother, whom they call Marmee. Meg works as a tutor for a wealthy family. Jo writes stories to earn money for the household. Beth stays home to help with the housework. Amy focuses on her studies and her art. They all try to improve their characters while facing many hard jobs.

Alcott began writing the book because her publisher, Thomas Niles, asked her to.

At first, Alcott did not want to write a story just for girls. She actually preferred writing short stories and often felt she was just "plodding away." However, she wrote the manuscript in record time to earn money. Even though she was unsure, the book became a huge success. Readers were very eager to hear more about the March family. Alcott later wrote two sequels called Little Men and Jo's Boys to satisfy her fans.

There are many important details in the lives of the sisters. Meg is the oldest and is known for her beauty. Jo is a tomboy who loves to write. Beth is a shy pianist who later struggles with her health. Amy is an artist who dreams of fine things. During the story, Beth gets very sick with scarlet fever. This illness leaves her weak for the rest of her life.

The book also shows how marriage worked in the 1800s. At that time, about 93% of women in America were married.

This novel is part of a style called realism. This means the author describes everyday life in a natural way. Instead of magic, the characters deal with real things like work and family. Alcott showed how women could have equal partnerships in marriage. For example, Meg and her husband John Brooke share decisions in their home. The book has been translated into many languages around the world. It is also turned into many plays and movies for people to enjoy.
