Long ago, the land was very different. In the 1200s, Mindaugas united the tribes. He became the first king. By the 1300s, Lithuania was a Grand Duchy. It was the largest country in Europe! Later, it joined with Poland. They formed the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. This was a very rich and large state.

Lithuania has faced many hard times. Other countries took over its land. It was occupied during the World Wars. But the people fought for their freedom. In 1990, Lithuania became independent again. It was the first to break away from the Soviet Union. Today, it is a happy and modern place.
