Lithography is a way to print images and text.

It was invented in 1796 by Alois Senefelder. The name comes from a Greek word for stone.

This method works because oil and water do not mix. In the old way, a person drew on flat limestone. They used a greasy substance like wax or oil. Then, they treated the stone with a mix of acid and gum arabic. This made the stone attract water in the blank areas.

When it is time to print, the stone is moistened. The water stays in the blank parts. Then, an oil-based ink is rolled on. The ink only sticks to the greasy drawing. Finally, a press pushes paper against the stone to catch the ink.

Today, most things use offset lithography. This is a newer way to print books and magazines. Instead of stone, it uses metal or plastic plates. The ink moves from the plate to a rubber blanket first. Then, it moves to the paper. This keeps the paper dry and works very fast.
