Lisa Marie Nowak is an American aeronautical engineer and a former NASA astronaut. She also served as a retired officer in the United States Navy.

Her career involved high-level work in flight testing and space exploration. She reached the rank of captain in the Navy before her retirement. Nowak's life is defined by her intense scientific training and her service in space. However, her career also included a highly publicized legal incident in 2007. This event led to her departure from both NASA and the Navy.

Nowak's path to space began with a deep interest in science. While growing up in Maryland, she watched the Apollo 11 Moon mission in 1969. This event inspired her goal to become an astronaut.

She attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. She graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering. At that time, women were still a small part of the student body. By the time she entered as a plebe in 1981, women made up only 6 percent of the academy.

Following graduation, Nowak began a long and successful career in the Navy. She served as a naval flight officer and a test pilot. She completed flight training at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida.

She flew many different aircraft, including the EA-7L Corsair II and the ERA-3B Skywarrior. Nowak also attended the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in Maryland. She graduated in 1994 and helped develop aircraft like the F/A-18 Hornet. Throughout her Navy career, she logged over 1,500 hours of flight time. She flew in more than 30 different types of aircraft.

In 1996, NASA selected Nowak as part of Astronaut Group 16.

This group was the largest selected since 1978. The many candidates were nicknamed "The Sardines" because they were often packed into training facilities. Nowak trained as a mission specialist, which is a role focused on specific technical tasks. Her training included studying the systems of the Space Shuttle. She also practiced in large pools to prepare for weightlessness.

She also trained in a special airplane called the "Vomit Comet" to simulate space flight.

Nowak specialized in operating the robotic arms used in space.

In July 2006, she flew on the STS-121 mission. During this mission, she was responsible for the robotic arms of the shuttle and the International Space Station.

This role required great precision to move equipment in orbit. She worked alongside a crew to complete the mission's goals. Her work was a key part of the technical success of the STS-121 flight.

In 2007, Nowak's career changed due to a criminal misconduct incident in Orlando, Florida.

She was involved in an incident involving a U.S. Air Force captain. This led to charges of burglary and battery. In 2009, Nowak reached a plea deal. She pleaded guilty to felony burglary of a car and misdemeanor battery. These legal issues had serious consequences for her professional life. NASA terminated her assignment as an astronaut following the incident.

The Navy also took action regarding her military service. A Naval Board of Inquiry voted unanimously to change her rank. She was demoted from captain to commander. The board also required her to retire from the Navy under other than honorable conditions. This happened after she had completed 25 years of service.

Reports later indicated that she moved to the private sector in Texas. Her journey reflects both the high achievements and the sudden changes possible in a professional career.
