A leader named Peter the Great helped start the modern city. He ordered a factory to be built in 1703. This factory made iron shells for cannons. Later, in 1779, Lipetsk became an official town.

Many people work in big industries there. Most of these factories are south of the river. One very large company is Novolipetsk Steel. It employs about 48,000 people. Other factories make tractors, food, and even refrigerators.

Lipetsk is also a place for health. It has old resorts that use mud baths. These baths help treat patients. People also drink special water from springs.
