Brocka was a very important leader for artists. He helped start a group called Concerned Artists of the Philippines. This group helped artists speak up about what was happening in their country. He even helped write a new set of laws for the Philippines. These laws are part of the nation's constitution.

His films won many big awards. One film, *Insiang*, was the first Filipino movie shown at the Cannes Film Festival in France. Another film, *Manila in the Claws of Light*, is called one of the greatest films ever made in the Philippines. After he died in a car accident in 1991, he was named a National Artist. This is a very high honor for people who help Philippine art grow.
