It serves as the prefecture of the Haute-Vienne department. The city sits on the first western foothills of the Massif Central. The Vienne river flows through the urban area. This river provided the original ford crossing point for the settlement. Limoges is the second most populated town in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It follows Bordeaux in population size. The urban area contained 323,494 inhabitants in 2022. Residents of the city are known as Limougeauds.

The history of the city began around 10 BC. The Romans founded the city under the name Augustoritum. This name used the Gaulish word "rito," which means a ford.

The Roman city followed a typical square plan. It featured two main streets that crossed in the center. The city included an amphitheatre measuring 136 by 115 metres. It also had a theatre, a forum, and several sanctuaries. The city possessed its own Senate and its own currency. Eventually, the name evolved from the Lemovices tribe into Limoges. The surrounding area became known as the Limousin.

During the Middle Ages, Limoges became a significant artistic center. The Abbey of Saint-Martial played a major role in this growth. The abbey held a large library that supported local culture. It was also home to the St. Martial School of music composition. A famous member of this school was the 13th-century troubadour Bertran de Born. The city was divided into two fortified settlements during its peak. One area was the town proper near the Vienne river. The other was the castle area. In 1370, Edward, the Black Prince, occupied the city. This event resulted in the deaths of many residents.

A major shift occurred during the industrial revolution. In 1768, workers discovered kaolin near Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche. Kaolin is a type of rock rich in fine, white clay. This discovery allowed the Limoges porcelain industry to develop rapidly. The industry produced dinnerware and famous Limoges Boxes. Today, more than 50% of all porcelain made in France comes from Limoges.

The city also has a history of leather production. This was possible because the Vienne river provided water and power. Factories still produce luxury leather goods like shoes and bags.

Limoges is famous for its decorative arts and craftsmanship. Enamel work has been a tradition since at least the 12th century.

Artists used enamel to export beautiful items throughout the Christian world. The city also hosts workshops for stained glass. These skills helped Limoges join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in 2017. This membership is in the category of Crafts and Popular Arts. The city has also held the label "City of Art and History" since 2008. This title recognizes its commitment to preserving cultural heritage.
