Jones was born on July 11, 1974, in the Bedford–Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City. She was the second child of Linwood Jones, a former U.S. Marine, and had an older brother named Christopher. Her early life involved significant personal challenges. After her parents separated when she was nine, she experienced a tumultuous relationship with her father. At age fourteen, she left home and lived on the streets, eventually dropping out of high school. She later attended Sarah J. Hale Vocational High School for two and a half years before transferring to Brooklyn College Academy to complete her remaining school years.

Her professional music career began in the mid-1990s through her connection with rapper Christopher Wallace, known as the Notorious B.I.G. In 1994, Wallace discovered her and invited her to join the Brooklyn-based group Junior M.A.F.I.A. Their debut album, *Conspiracy*, was released on August 29, 1995. While the album received mediocre reviews, it debuted at number eight on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. The album sold 69,000 copies in its first week and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on December 6, 1995. This period provided the foundation for her transition into a solo artist.

Lil' Kim launched her solo career in November 1996 with the release of her debut album, *Hard Core*. This project was a massive commercial success, selling over six million copies worldwide. At the time, it achieved the highest debut in the United States for a female rap album. The album earned a double platinum certification from the RIAA by March 2001. During this era, she adopted the nickname "Queen Bee" and released influential singles such as "No Time," "Not Tonight (Ladies Night)," and "Crush on You." She also became the first female rapper to secure three consecutive number ones on the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks chart.

Her musical achievements continued into the new millennium with several high-profile collaborations and hits. In 2000, she released her second album, *The Notorious K.I.M.*, which debuted at number four on the Billboard 200. In 2001, she participated in a remake of the song "Lady Marmalade" alongside Christina Aguilera, Pink, and Mýa. This track reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped charts in 14 different countries. The success of this collaboration earned her a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. Her third studio album, *La Bella Mafia*, followed in 2003 and was certified platinum, featuring the successful single "Magic Stick."

Lil' Kim's influence extends deeply into the world of mainstream fashion and beauty. In 1999, she collaborated with celebrity nail artist Bernadette Thompson to debut the "Money Nails" design. These were intricate acrylic nails featuring pieces of actual one-hundred-dollar bills. The design became an instant trendsetter and was even exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art. Her bold fashion choices, such as her outfit at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards, solidified her reputation as a trendsetter. She has also modeled for major companies including Versace, Iceberg, and Baby Phat.

Despite her professional highs, Jones faced legal difficulties in 2005. She served a one-year prison sentence for lying to a jury regarding her friends' involvement in a shooting that occurred four years earlier. Even during her incarceration, her career remained active, as her fourth album, *The Naked Truth*, was released that same year to positive critical reviews. A reality series titled *Lil' Kim: Countdown to Lockdown* premiered on BET in 2006 to document her experience. Since then, she has continued to release music, including her fifth studio album, *9*, in 2019, and has remained a significant figure in hip-hop culture.
