Liguria is a coastal region located in northwestern Italy.

Its capital city is Genoa. The region is part of the Alps–Mediterranean Euroregion. It sits along the Ligurian Sea. To the west, it borders France. To the north, it meets Piedmont. To the east, it touches Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany. The territory is roughly the same size as the former Republic of Genoa.

It is the third smallest region in Italy. However, it is one of the most densely populated. It has 287 inhabitants per square kilometer. This is much higher than the national average in Italy.

The geography of Liguria is defined by a narrow strip of land. This land is squeezed between the sea and two mountain ranges. The Alps and the Apennines cross the territory from east to west.

These mountains form an interrupted chain. This means the ridge is not a continuous line. In some areas, the mountains are very high and compact. Near Ventimiglia, massifs rise to between 2,700 and 3,000 meters. In other areas, the mountains are lower. The hinterland of Savona and Genoa has valleys and passes. These passes often stay below 500 meters above sea level.

The highest point in the region is Monte Saccarello.

The climate in Liguria is mild throughout the year. This is because the sea and the hills work together. Average winter temperatures are 10°C. Average summer temperatures are 25°C. This makes the region pleasant even in winter. Rainfall can be quite heavy sometimes. This happens because of an orographic effect. An orographic effect occurs when mountains force air to rise. This causes moisture to fall as rain. Genoa and La Spezia can receive 1,000 mm of rain annually. Other areas receive the standard Mediterranean rainfall of 600 mm.

The coastal strip is known as the Italian Riviera.

It stretches about 350 kilometers from the French border to the east. The Riviera includes nearly all of the Ligurian coastline. It is divided into two main sections. The western part is the Riviera di Ponente. This means the "coast of the setting sun." The eastern part is the Riviera di Levante. This means the "coast of the rising sun." The division happens at Voltri. The Riviera crosses four provinces: Genoa, Savona, Imperia, and La Spezia. It is a major center for tourism. Many visitors come for the 300 days of sunshine each year.

The Balzi Rossi caves in Ventimiglia show very old traces of occupation. Archaeologists also found remains of a "young prince" from the Upper Palaeolithic. This boy was about fifteen years old. He was buried with shell beads and deer teeth.

The region is named after the ancient Ligures people. Their territory was once much larger than the current region. It once reached the Po river and southeastern France. In the 4th millennium BC, people began mining copper here. The Libiola and Monte Loreto mines date to 3700 BC. These are the oldest copper mines in the western Mediterranean.

The region also protects its natural beauty. Natural reserves cover 12% of the land. These include one national reserve and six large parks.
