Apennine Mountains

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Apennine Mountains are a massive system of parallel mountain chains.

They run the entire length of the Italian peninsula. In the northwest, they connect to the Ligurian Alps at Altare. The range ends in the southwest at Reggio di Calabria. This city sits at the very tip of the peninsula. Since 2000, the system has included northern Sicily.

This extended system forms a large arc. This shape encloses the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian seas. The mountains are essential to the geography of Italy. They even give their name to the Apennine peninsula.

The mountains are divided into three main sectors. These are the northern, central, and southern Apennines. The northern sector includes three distinct sub-ranges. These are the Ligurian, Tuscan–Emilian, and Umbrian Apennines. The central sector is more complex. It is divided into an inner and outer arc. The northern part of this center is the Umbria-Marche Apennines. The southern part is the Abruzzi Apennines. The southern sector includes the mountains of Sicily. This division helps scientists study the different rock types and shapes.

The northern Apennines start at the Bocchetta di Altare. This pass marks the border with the Ligurian Alps. The Ligurian Apennines border the Ligurian Sea. They separate the Gulf of Genoa from the Po Valley. The highest point here is Monte Maggiorasca.

Moving southeast, the chain becomes the Tuscan–Emilian Apennines. This range crosses the border of Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany. The highest peak in the northern section is Monte Cimone.

A separate branch called the Apuan Alps also exists. These mountains are made of marble. This stone is famous for the marble industry in Carrara.

The central Apennines form a thick and complex region. The mountains here consist of parallel chains. These chains look like single ridges in the north and south. However, the center is much more rugged. The Umbria-Marche section runs from Bocca Serriola to Forlì pass. The Abruzzi section lies further south. This central area is geologically different from the northern parts. It is defined by specific rock types and mountain-building events. The shape of the mountains curves around the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The mountains serve as a vital refuge for wildlife.

They contain some of Europe's best-preserved forests. They also have important montane grasslands. Many areas are protected within national parks. These parks support a high diversity of flora and fauna. The mountains are a last refuge for large predators. The Italian wolf lives in these wild spaces.

The Marsican brown bear also lives here. These bears are now extinct in the rest of Central Europe. The ecosystem remains intact due to human protection.

Human history is deeply tied to these peaks. During the Middle Bronze Age, the Apennine culture lived here.

These people were alpine cattle herdsmen. They grazed animals in mountain meadows and groves. They lived in small hamlets in defensible locations. They also used caves and rock shelters as temporary camps. These people created a unique style of ornamental pottery. The pottery featured spirals, meanders, and geometric zones. Archaeologists have found this pottery on Ischia and Lipari islands.

Transportation through the mountains has changed over time. Ancient Romans used the Via Flaminia to connect cities. Today, modern engineering makes travel much faster. Many tunnels support the high-speed rail lines.

The Great Apennine Tunnel is the longest entirely within Italy. It is 18.5 kilometers long. The Autostrada del Sole, or Route A1, also uses many tunnels. This road helps people travel between Florence and Bologna. For hikers, the mountains offer long trails. The European walking route E1 crosses the northern and central sections. The Grand Italian Trail traverses the entire system into Sicily.
