Ray Manzarek played the organ and added a special musical pattern. He used a Vox Continental organ for the recording. Jim Morrison was the singer and wrote some of the words. These different ideas came together to make a unique sound.

The band recorded the song in August 1966. They released it in January 1967 on their first album. The full album version lasts over seven minutes long. Because it was so long, a shorter version was made for the radio. This shorter version was under three minutes long. It removed most of the instrumental parts so it could play on AM radio. This helped the song become even more popular with listeners.

Many other artists have performed their own versions of the song. In 1968, a musician named José Feliciano released a cover. His version was slower and used a Spanish guitar style. It reached number three on the charts and won Grammy Awards.
