Life of Pi is a famous novel written by Yann Martel.

The story begins in Pondicherry, India, during the 1960s. Pi grew up as the son of a zoo manager. He was named after a famous swimming pool in France. In school, he chose the short name "Pi" to avoid teasing. He liked the name because it relates to a special number in math. Pi was a very curious boy who studied many religions. He decided to follow Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam all at once. He simply wanted to love God in every way he could.
In July 1977, Pi's life changed forever during a sea voyage. His family was moving their zoo from India to Canada. They traveled on a large Japanese ship called the Tsimtsum. Near Manila, a huge storm hit the ship and caused it to sink. Pi escaped onto a small lifeboat in the Pacific Ocean. He was not alone on the boat with him. He shared the space with a zebra, a hyena, and an orangutan. Most importantly, a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker was also there.
Pi spent 227 days lost at sea on that lifeboat. To stay safe from the tiger, Pi had to be very smart. He built a small raft out of floating devices. He tied the raft to the front of the boat. This gave him a little bit of extra space. Pi used food to train the tiger to follow his rules. He also used a whistle to give the animal signals. He even used seasickness as a way to punish the tiger. Through these hard steps, Pi learned to coexist with Richard Parker.
Eventually, the lifeboat reached a beach in Mexico. Richard Parker walked into the jungle and did not look back. This left Pi feeling very sad and alone. Later, Pi told two officials about what happened during the shipwreck. He told them two different versions of his story. One story included the animals, and the other was much different. The book asks us which story we prefer to believe. It shows how stories can help us understand our lives. The novel was even made into a major film in 2012.
Life of Pi is a philosophical novel written by Canadian author Yann Martel.
The story follows Piscine Molitor "Pi" Patel, a boy from Pondicherry, India. His name was a tribute to a swimming pool in France. To avoid being teased by schoolmates, he adopted the name "Pi." This name also references the mathematical constant representing the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. Pi grew up as the son of a zoo manager during the 1960s. He was a deeply curious person who practiced Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam simultaneously. He sought to understand God through the lens of each different faith.
In July 1977, Pi's life changed during a voyage to Canada. His family was moving their zoo animals aboard a Japanese freighter called the Tsimtsum. While sailing near Manila, the ship encountered a storm and sank. Pi survived by escaping onto a small lifeboat in the Pacific Ocean. He was not alone on this vessel. He shared the boat with a spotted hyena, a zebra, and an orangutan named Orange Juice. A Bengal tiger named Richard Parker also emerged from under a tarpaulin.
Survival on the lifeboat required intense effort and specific methods. To maintain distance from the tiger, Pi built a small raft from rescue flotation devices. He tethered this raft to the bow of the boat to create a separate living space. Pi used several techniques to manage Richard Parker. He used food as a positive reinforcer to condition the animal. He also used a whistle for signaling and used seasickness as a punishment mechanism. Through these steps, Pi eventually asserted himself as the alpha animal. This allowed him to coexist with the tiger for 227 days.
The journey included several difficult stages and strange encounters. At one point, exposure caused Pi to become temporarily blind. He also encountered another drifting boat with a different castaway. When the two boats connected, the other person attempted to murder Pi. However, Richard Parker intervened and killed the attacker. Later, the lifeboat reached a floating island made of algae. This island was inhabited by hundreds of thousands of meerkats. Pi discovered the island's plant life was actually carnivorous, forcing him to return to the sea. Eventually, the boat washed ashore on a beach in Mexico.
After reaching safety, Pi faced an inquiry by the Japanese Ministry of Transport. The officials were skeptical of his story involving the animals. Pi then offered a second, much darker version of the events. In this version, the animals were actually people. The hyena represented a cook, the zebra a sailor, and the orangutan represented Pi's mother. This second story involved extreme violence and cannibalism. Pi asked the officials which story they preferred: the one with animals or the one without. The investigators ultimately chose the story with the animals.
Martel drew inspiration from several historical and literary sources. The name Richard Parker was inspired by characters in Edgar Allan Poe's work. Martel also noted connections to the 1884 legal case R v Dudley and Stephens. This case involved a shipwreck and cannibalism involving a boy named Richard Parker. Some critics noted similarities to the novella Max and the Cats by Moacyr Scliar. However, reviewers noted the two works have very different structures and themes. Martel's novel focuses heavily on the experience in the lifeboat, using 211 of its 354 pages for that journey.
