It was part of a large group of buildings. This group was called the Mouseion. It was built to honor the Muses. These were nine goddesses of the arts.

Kings in Egypt wanted to collect all knowledge. They used a lot of money to buy scrolls. These scrolls were made from papyrus plants.

Some kings even took books from ships in the harbor. They made copies for the owners and kept the originals. The library held between 40,000 and 400,000 scrolls.

Many smart people worked there. They lived in the Mouseion. They had free food and a place to stay. This helped them focus on their work. One scholar named Eratosthenes measured the Earth. Another man named Hero made an early steam engine.

Over many years, the library began to fade. It lost money and support. Some scrolls burned during a war with Julius Caesar.

Later, wars and other changes destroyed what was left. Even so, the library remains a symbol of learning.
