Lexis (linguistics)

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

All the words in a language are a big group. We call this group the lexis. Some words go together in small sets. For example, words about religion form one set.

We often use ready-made chunks of words. These are groups we know by heart. They help us speak much faster. It is a way to save time.

Sometimes we use words like metaphors. We can say we "spend" time. This is like spending money.

Our brains also use rules. We use these rules to make new sentences. This helps us talk in new ways.

Learning these words helps us share ideas. It is a great way to connect.
