Leprosy is a sickness caused by a tiny germ called M. leprae. Long ago, people did not know how this germ spread. They thought the sickness was a punishment from God. This made people treat those with the sickness very poorly.

To keep others safe, people lived in isolated colonies. These were towns far away from other people. Some were on high mountains. Others were near busy roads to get help. Some colonies even made their own money. People feared the germ lived on regular coins.

In the 1890s, a man named G. A. Hansen found the germ. This helped doctors learn more about the disease. Later, new medicines were made. By the 1940s, doctors did not need to isolate people anymore. Today, most people get help at home. Some special colonies still exist in places like India and China.
