He appeared in commercials for brands such as Matchbox cars, Kraft Singles, and Apple Jacks. He also had a recurring role in the sitcom Parenthood between 1990 and 1991. Early in his journey, he faced significant professional hurdles. He remained jobless for eighteen months despite completing 100 auditions. During this time, an agent suggested he change his name to Lenny Williams to better appeal to American audiences. DiCaprio refused to change his name and continued to persevere with his father's encouragement.

His first major breakthrough occurred in 1993 with the film This Boy's Life. In this movie, he played a character named Toby. He starred alongside Robert De Niro, who handpicked him from a list of 400 actors. That same year, he received critical acclaim for his role in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. He played a developmentally disabled boy named Arnie. To prepare for this role, he studied the mannerisms of similarly impaired children. This performance earned him his first Academy Award nomination. He became the seventh-youngest nominee in that category.

DiCaprio achieved international stardom through romantic films. He starred in Romeo + Juliet in 1996 and the film Titanic in 1997. At the time of its release, Titanic became the highest-grossing film in the world. Following this massive success, he chose to change his career direction. He wanted to move away from his image as a romantic hero. He began seeking roles in different genres, such as crime dramas. This led to his first successful collaborations with the director Martin Scorsese.
