Leon Trotsky was a major Russian revolutionary and political theorist.
He played a central role in several massive historical shifts. These included the 1905 Revolution and the 1917 October Revolution. He also helped establish the Soviet Union. Trotsky was a key figure alongside Vladimir Lenin from 1917 until Lenin died in 1924. His specific political ideas eventually formed a school of thought called Trotskyism. This movement focused on international socialism and democratic party structures.
Born Lev Davidovich Bronstein in 1879, he grew up in a Jewish farming family.
His family lived in Yanovka within the Russian Empire. As a student in Odessa, he excelled in mathematics and science. He was also a very frequent reader of many books. This education helped him develop a strong interest in political philosophy. He eventually moved to the port town of Nikolayev to organize workers. This activity led to his arrest in 1898 and a two-year prison sentence.
Trotsky's early political life involved many escapes and exiles.
In 1900, he was sentenced to four years of exile in Siberia. He married Aleksandra Sokolovskaya during his time in prison. They were exiled to the Baikal region together. In 1902, Trotsky escaped from Siberia by hiding in a load of hay. After this, he adopted the name "Trotsky" as a revolutionary pseudonym. He moved to London and joined the editors of the newspaper Iskra. There, he met Vladimir Lenin and became a prominent writer.
During the 1917 revolutions, Trotsky became a massive leader in Russia.
After the February Revolution, he joined the Bolshevik party. He was elected chairman of the Petrograd Soviet. He then helped lead the October Revolution. This theory suggested that revolution must spread to advanced capitalist nations to survive. In 1936, he published The Revolution Betrayed. In this book, he called the Soviet Union a "degenerated workers' state." He also founded the Fourth International in 1938 as an alternative to the Comintern.
