Lei Feng was a soldier in the People's Liberation Army of China.

He became a major figure in Chinese political propaganda. The government used his life to promote specific social values. These values included selflessness, modesty, and devotion to the state. His story became the center of a massive national campaign. This campaign was known as "Learn from Lei Feng as a Model." It aimed to encourage citizens to act with a socialist spirit. This spirit is often described by the phrase "Unus pro omnibus, omnes pro uno." This Latin phrase means "one for all, all for one."

The mechanism of the Lei Feng campaign relied heavily on a personal diary.

This diary was presented to the public by Lin Biao in 1963. The text contained approximately 200,000 words. It detailed Lei's admiration for Chairman Mao Zedong. It also recorded his many small, selfless acts for his comrades. One specific account describes him giving his lunchbox to a hungry coworker.

Through these stories, the state created a model for behavior. The goal was to inspire "revolutionary zeal" among the masses. This helped the government promote political ideology and moral education.

The official biography of Lei Feng describes a very difficult life. He was born in Wangcheng, near Changsha, in Hunan Province. His family history is marked by significant loss. His father died when Lei was only five years old. His elder brother and younger brother also died during his childhood. His mother eventually died by suicide after being dishonored by a landlord. These hardships were used to explain his devotion to the state. After these losses, he worked as a bulldozer operator in 1958. He joined a transportation unit of the army at age twenty.

He died in 1962 at the age of 21. His death occurred when a telephone pole hit him during a task.

However, the historicity of Lei Feng is a subject of intense debate. Many Western scholars believe the diary was a fabrication. They suggest that party officials likely wrote it under Lin Biao's direction. This would explain why the diary was so perfectly aligned with political goals. Some researchers also point to the quality of the available photographs. There are twelve main photos of Lei Feng performing good deeds. These images are of exceptionally high professional quality. It is unusual for an unknown soldier to have such professional documentation. Some historians argue that the "Lei Feng" known to the world was an invention of the propaganda department.

Despite these doubts, the Lei Feng icon has survived for decades. The campaign shifted in 1964 to focus more on a cult of Mao. Many high-ranking leaders have praised him as a symbol of altruism. This includes leaders like Deng Xiaoping, Zhou Enlai, and Jiang Zemin. Even after the death of Mao, state media continued to promote his image. His influence can be seen in various forms of modern media. His face appears on T-shirts, stickers, and even some commercial packaging. The phrase "living Lei Feng" is still used to describe selfless people. It has become a noun or adjective in the Chinese language.

Today, Lei Feng remains a part of the national curriculum.

However, the legacy of Lei Feng is not viewed the same by everyone. Among some segments of the Chinese population, he is a source of cynicism. Some young people view him as a "laughingstock" because of the perceived inventions in his story. A 2008 survey by Xinhua noted that many students have only vague knowledge of him. Only 32 percent of those surveyed had actually read his diary. While he remains a powerful tool for political education, his image has also become kitsch. This means he is sometimes used in a way that is seen as shallow or overly sentimental. His story remains a complex link between political ideology and daily life.
