It lasted for 158 years. Before it closed, it was the fourth-largest investment bank in the United States. An investment bank helps companies manage and grow their money. The firm had about 25,000 employees working all over the world. It did many different jobs with money and stocks. These jobs included research and managing private wealth. This company was a major part of the global economy for a long time.

The firm's story began with a family.

In 1844, a man named Henry Lehman moved from Bavaria to Alabama. He first opened a dry-goods store. His brothers, Emanuel and Mayer, joined him later. By 1850, they formed Lehman Brothers. They started trading in cotton, which was a huge crop in the South. They even accepted raw cotton as payment for goods. Later, the business moved to New York City to trade cotton there. They helped start the New York Cotton Exchange in 1870.

As the years passed, the company changed how it worked. It stopped being just a cotton trader. Instead, it began helping many famous companies grow. In 1899, it handled its first public offering. This is when a company sells stock to the public. They worked with many names like Sears, Roebuck and Company. They also helped fund the oil industry and even television makers. By the 1920s, the firm was a very large and stable business. It even survived the hard times of the Great Depression.

In the later years, the firm saw many changes in leadership.

In 1973, Pete Peterson became the leader to help the firm. He led them to many years of record profits. However, the company faced internal struggles later on. In 1984, a company called American Express bought Lehman. For a while, it was known as Shearson Lehman/American Express. Eventually, the firm became independent again in 1994. This new version was called Lehman Brothers Holdings, Inc. It was led by a man named Dick Fuld.

The end of the company came during a very difficult time.

In 2008, the firm was caught in the subprime mortgage crisis. This involved risky loans for homes. Because of this, many clients left the firm. Its stock price also fell very fast. On September 15, 2008, Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy. This was the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history. It was even bigger than the bankruptcy of a company called Worldcom. This event helped trigger a huge global financial crisis.
