Legs McNeil is a prominent American journalist and editor. He is best known for documenting subcultures and music history. His career began with the creation of Punk magazine. This publication became a seminal work for the punk music movement. McNeil has also served as an editor at Spin magazine. He was also the editor-in-chief of Nerve magazine. Through his writing, he captures the spirit of various cultural eras.

McNeil often uses a specific method called oral history. An oral history is a book built from many direct interviews. Instead of just describing events, he uses the words of people who lived them. He co-authored the book Please Kill Me with Gillian McCain. This book focuses on the history of punk music. It helped launch a major trend in music books. This style allows readers to hear the raw truth from the subjects themselves.

His career includes many different types of media work. He has worked as a staff writer for Spin magazine since 1985. In 1991, he wrote about the Los Angeles rave scene for Details magazine. In 1993, he held the position of editor-in-chief at Nerve magazine. He also explores history through documentary films. In 2025, he directed his first feature documentary, Pusherman. This film tells the story of Frank Lucas. It stars Frank Lucas and the writer Mark Jacobson.

McNeil's early professional life started with a bold idea. At age 19, he decided to create a new type of media. He teamed up with two high school friends, John Holmstrom and Ged Dunn. They wanted to make a living through this new venture. Holmstrom specifically wanted to combine rock n roll with comic books. This collaboration resulted in the founding of Punk magazine. This early success set the stage for his future in journalism.

His written works have reached a global audience. The book Please Kill Me has been published in 12 different languages. This shows how much people around the world value his work. He also wrote The Other Hollywood about the porn film industry. This book was a collaboration with Jennifer Osborne and Peter Pavia. It explores how American pornography connects to fame, money, and law enforcement. His books often capture the "pop culture zeitgeist," or the spirit of the times.

McNeil has also engaged in unique personal adventures. In 1986, he went on a Mississippi River excursion. He traveled with musician Richard Hell to celebrate Mark Twain. They used inflatable rubber rafts for the journey. They started in Hannibal, Missouri, and ended in Hamburg, Illinois. This trip lasted several days. They later wrote an article about the experience for Spin magazine.

Beyond books, McNeil is a frequent presence on television. He has appeared in documentaries on the History Channel and VH1. He produced a three-night special about the porn industry for Court TV. This special was the highest-rated original programming in that network's history. In 2016, he appeared in the documentary Danny Says. This film is about the rock music publicist Danny Fields. McNeil appeared alongside famous figures like Iggy Pop and Alice Cooper. His diverse work connects music, history, and modern media.
