Math helps us find patterns in numbers. Adrien-Marie Legendre was a mathematician. He introduced a special tool in the late 1700s. We call this the Legendre symbol. It is a way to track special numbers. These are called quadratic residues. A quadratic residue is a number that fits a pattern. It can be made by multiplying a number by itself. The symbol uses numbers to show this. It can be 1, -1, or 0. A 1 means the number is a residue. A -1 means it is not. A 0 means the number is a multiple of the prime.

This tool is very useful. It works with odd prime numbers. It helps solve the law of quadratic reciprocity. This law explains how two different primes relate. The symbol is also multiplicative. This means you can multiply two symbols to find a new one. If you multiply two residues, you get a residue. If you multiply a residue and a non-residue, you get a non-residue.

Other math tools grew from this idea. The Jacobi symbol is one example. It is a larger version of the Legendre symbol. The symbol makes big math tasks easier to handle.
