Leg mechanism

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Most machines use wheels to move. Wheels stay on the ground. But some machines use legs. These are called leg mechanisms.

A leg mechanism is a set of parts that move. It uses a push to walk. The foot touches the ground and then lifts up. This lets the machine step over bumps. This is better than wheels on rough ground.

Designers have many goals for these machines. They want the speed to stay steady. They want the foot to touch the ground often. A four-leg machine should touch the ground for half its cycle. A six-leg machine should touch for a third of its cycle. This helps the machine stay steady. Some people make these as art. Theo Jansen made the Strandbeest.

Another design is the Klann linkage. This uses parts called linkages to move the leg. It is used in the Mondo Spider. Designers also use a crank. A crank is a part that turns in a circle. This turns the circle motion into a walking motion.
