They sit where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. This chain of islands starts at the Virgin Islands. It stretches southeast to Guadeloupe.

Most of these islands were made by volcanoes. Some of these volcanoes are still active. For example, Montserrat had eruptions in the 1990s. In Guadeloupe, the highest point is La Grande Soufrière.

The name comes from old sailing ships. Sailors used the trade winds to travel. These winds blow from the southeast. "Leeward" means the side away from the wind. This helped sailors know where they were.

Many people lived here a long time ago. The Caribs moved to these islands around 1200 AD. Later, Spanish explorers arrived. The British also made the islands a colony in 1671.

Many islands have different rulers today. Some belong to the United States. Others belong to France or the United Kingdom. There are two countries and eleven territories in the group.
