This fish is called Leedsichthys. It was a very large ray-finned fish. It is one of the biggest fish ever known.

Scientists have found its fossils in many places. These include England, France, Germany, and Chile.

Finding these fossils was not easy. Much of the fish was made of cartilage. Cartilage is a soft part of the body. It does not turn into bone fossils. Because of this, people often mistook the bones for dinosaur parts. Some thought they were bones from a stegosaur.

It is hard to know how long the fish was. This is because the spine did not fossilize well. Some people thought it was very long. New research says the largest ones were about 16 meters long.

The fish had a large head. It did not have teeth. Instead, it was a filter-feeder. It used gill rakers to eat. These are tiny bone plates. They worked like a sieve to catch plankton from the water.
