Her professional career has spanned more than eight decades. She has earned prestigious honors, including an Academy Award and two Primetime Emmy Awards. She also received a Directors Guild of America Award. Grant is notable for being one of the last surviving performers from the Hollywood blacklist era. Her life in the arts shows a remarkable ability to adapt and grow through different challenges.

Grant began her journey in the performing arts through classical dance. She made her first stage ballet performance at the Metropolitan Opera House in 1933. During her adolescence, she became a member of the American Ballet under the direction of George Balanchine. To build her skills as an actress, she studied at several famous institutions in New York City. These included the Art Students League, the Juilliard School of Music, and the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. She also trained at the HB Studio and the Actors Studio to master dramatic methods.

Her early acting career saw rapid success on both stage and screen. In 1949, she performed a major role in the Broadway play Detective Story. She reprised this role as a shoplifter in the 1951 film adaptation. This performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. It also won her the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival. However, her rising stardom was suddenly interrupted by political conflict.

In the 1950s, Grant was blacklisted for twelve years. This occurred after she refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). During this period, her opportunities in major film and television productions were severely limited. To continue working, she often used pseudonyms, which are fake names used to protect an identity. She also spent these years working as an acting teacher. She took smaller roles in theater and television to maintain her connection to the craft.

Grant successfully rebuilt her career in the 1960s and 1970s. She won a Primetime Emmy Award in 1966 for her role in the television series Peyton Place. Throughout the 1970s, she received three Academy Award nominations for her work in films like The Landlord and Voyage of the Damned. In 1975, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Shampoo. This film was a massive success, becoming the largest hit in Columbia Pictures' 50-year history.

In the 1980s, Grant transitioned into a new professional role as a director. She began this shift after participating in the first AFI Directing Workshop for Women. Her directorial work focused heavily on documentaries that explored important social issues. She directed films about female bank tellers on strike in The Willmar 8. She also made films about women in prison, transgender individuals, and domestic abuse. Her documentary Down and Out in America, released in 1986, examined homelessness and unemployment in America.

Grant's career is defined by unique historical and professional milestones. In 1986, Down and Out in America won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. This achievement made her the only person to win an Academy Award for acting and later win one for directing a documentary. Her ability to move from the stage to the screen, and from acting to directing, demonstrates her deep understanding of storytelling. She continues to be a significant figure in the history of American cinema and documentary filmmaking.
