Her career spans several decades of film, television, and stage performance. She has earned significant recognition through many prestigious awards. These include a Golden Globe Award and two BAFTA Awards. She also received a Primetime Emmy Award for her television work. Her talent has been recognized with two Academy Award nominations. Caron is one of the few actresses from the classic MGM musical era who remains active in the film industry.

Caron began her professional life as a ballerina. She was a member of the Roland Petit company known as the Ballet des Champs Elysées. The famous dancer and actor Gene Kelly discovered her while she was performing with this company. He cast her in the 1951 musical An American in Paris. This role was originally intended for Cyd Charisse, who was pregnant at the time. Because Caron had never spoken on a stage before, Kelly helped her adjust to the demands of filmmaking. This debut led to a seven-year contract with MGM studios.

Her early life was marked by significant changes in her family's status. Born in Boulogne-sur-Seine in 1931, she was the daughter of Margaret Petit and Claude Caron. Her mother was an American Broadway dancer. Her father was a French chemist and the founder of the artisanal perfumier Guermantes. During World War II, the family lost their wealth. This period of poverty was difficult for her mother, who struggled with depression and alcoholism.
