When this gas interacted with the environment, it created sulfuric acid. This acid dissolved the rock to create the massive passages we see today. This unique process allows scientists to study five separate geologic formations from inside the cave.
Lechuguilla Cave is home to many rare and unusual types of mineral formations. Beyond the gypsum chandeliers and hairs, explorers have found soda straws and cave pearls. They have also discovered subaqueous helictites, which are mineral growths that grow in unusual directions. Other strange shapes include rusticles, U-loops, and J-loops. The cave also contains lemon-yellow sulfur deposits. While the cave is larger and deeper than the nearby Carlsbad Cavern, it has not yet yielded a single room larger than Carlsbad's Big Room. 
For a long time, people did not realize how large this cave truly was. In 1914, a mining claim was filed to collect bat guano from the entrance passages. At that time, the cave was considered a small, insignificant site. In the 1950s, cavers noticed wind roaring up from the rubble on the cave floor. This suggested that large passages were hidden beneath the debris. In 1984, a group from the Colorado Grotto led by Dave Allured began digging. On May 25, 1986, they broke through into large, natural walking passages. This breakthrough changed everything we knew about the area.
Since that breakthrough, exploration has continued at a massive scale. Explorers have mapped over 100 miles of passages. This makes Lechuguilla the eighth-longest cave in the world and the fourth-longest in the United States. In May 2012, a team led by Derek Bristol discovered a new section called "Oz." This discovery added a huge amount of distance to the total survey. Within Oz, they found a room called "Munchkinland" that is 150 feet long, 100 feet wide, and 60 feet high. They also found the "Kansas Twister" pit. This pit is over 400 feet from floor to ceiling and is the deepest pit in the park. 
Microbiology, the study of tiny living things, is also a major part of cave research. Rare chemolithoautotrophic bacteria live in the dark passages of the cave. These microbes feed on minerals like sulfur, iron, and manganese. They may even help shape the unusual speleothems or enlarge the cave. While some believe these bacteria do not use sunlight, they actually use atmospheric oxygen. This oxygen is produced by photosynthesis on the surface. The bacteria use dissolved groundwater hydrogen sulfide gas as their energy source. 
Scientists are also studying these microbes for their potential medicinal qualities. Some bacterial strains found in the cave have shown novel pathways for antibiotic resistance. For instance, researchers isolated a 4-million-year-old strain of Paenibacillus from the soil. This ancient strain is naturally resistant to many modern antibiotics, such as daptomycin. Because of these unique biological and geological features, the cave faces threats. Proposed gas and oil drilling on nearby Bureau of Land Management land is a major concern. Any leakage of fluids or gas into the cave could cause explosions or kill the local life.
