A lava field is a very large area of land.

These areas are mostly flat and made of lava flows. They are often called lava beds. Most fields are made of basalt lava. This type of lava is very fluid. It can flow easily over the ground. A field can stretch for tens or hundreds of kilometers.

These huge spaces change how the land looks.

The shape of a field tells us how the lava moved. One type is called sheet flow lava. It looks like a wrinkled or folded sheet. Another type is called pillow lava. This looks like a pile of pillows on top of each other.

Sometimes, a thing called lava flow inflation happens. A thin crust forms on top of the liquid lava. More lava keeps flowing underneath that crust. This makes the whole structure grow taller. It can grow up to four meters in height.

Different places on Earth create different types of lava. In the ocean, we find subaqueous lava fields. These are fields made under the water. Near the Galapagos Rift, you find sheet flow lava. This happens near volcanoes with fast-flowing centers. Near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, you find pillow lava. This happens near slow-flowing centers.

The location changes the way the lava settles.

Many famous lava fields exist around the world. There is the Boring Lava Field in the United States. In Idaho, there is Hell's Half Acre Lava Field. St. George in Utah is a city built around lava rocks. In Saudi Arabia, Harrat Rahat once threatened the city of Medina. This happened in the 13th century. Iceland also has many fields. The Reykjanes peninsula is mostly a barren waste of lava fields. The Ögmundarhraun fields in Iceland were made in 1151 AD.

Scientists use special tools to study these dark lands. They often look at them from the air. They also use photos from satellites. The lava is often a dark, near-black color. This color stands out against the rest of the landscape. Computers try to predict where new fields will go. This is a hard job for computers. Many small factors change how the lava flows. These factors include the shape of the source and the flow rate.
