She was a major icon of the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema. The American Film Institute ranked her as the 20th-greatest female star of that era. In 2009, she received an Academy Honorary Award for her massive contributions to motion pictures. She remained one of the last surviving major stars from Hollywood's most famous period. Her career spanned many decades and included film, theater, and voice work.

Bacall was born Betty Joan Perske on September 16, 1924, in the Bronx, New York.

Her parents, William and Natalie, were both Jewish. Her mother emigrated from Iași, Romania, through Ellis Island. Bacall's family eventually moved to Brooklyn. She received a private education at the Highland Manor Boarding School for Girls. She also attended Julia Richman High School in Manhattan. Her early life included working as a theater usher and a fashion model.

Her path to stardom involved a series of unique transformations.

After being discovered by Nicolas de Gunzburg, she appeared on the cover of Harper's Bazaar. Director Howard Hawks eventually signed her to a seven-year contract. He changed her first name to Lauren and helped her choose the surname Bacall. To develop her famous persona, she underwent intense vocal training. She shouted Shakespearean verses for hours to achieve a deeper, smoky voice. She also developed "The Look," a technique where she tilted her chin down and looked up at the camera.

Bacall's film career was defined by several distinct genres and styles. She became a symbol of film noir, a genre often featuring mysterious characters.

Her professional life was deeply connected to actor Humphrey Bogart. They met during the production of her debut film, To Have and Have Not, in 1944.

Their on-set chemistry was immediate, and they later married. They appeared together in several notable films, including Dark Passage and Key Largo. Bacall's role in her first film was originally very small. However, the part was expanded during production, which launched her into instant stardom. This partnership helped establish her image in popular culture.

Bacall was also a highly decorated stage performer. She made her Broadway debut in the play Johnny 2x4 in 1942.

She won two Tony Awards for Best Actress in a Musical. These honors were for her performances in Applause in 1970 and Woman of the Year in 1981. She also performed in London's West End. Her ability to move between the large scale of cinema and the intimacy of the theater showed her immense range.

Her legacy is measured by both critical acclaim and cultural impact. She was a woman who demanded high standards for her work. For example, she once declined to press her handprints at Grauman's Chinese Theatre. She felt she had not yet earned her place among the very best. Her career shows how a performer can evolve from a teenage model into a global icon. She connected with audiences across generations, from the classic era to modern viewers.
