Latitude

Latitude is a geographic coordinate used to specify a north-south position.

It is vital for locating any point on the surface of the Earth or other celestial bodies. Scientists define latitude as an angle. This angle ranges from 90° at the North Pole to -90° at the South Pole. The Equator serves as the starting point at 0°. Lines of constant latitude are called parallels. These lines run east-west and circle the planet parallel to the Equator.

When paired with longitude, latitude creates a coordinate system to pinpoint exact locations.

To understand how latitude works, we must look at the Earth's geometry. On a simple spherical model, the graticule is formed by parallels and meridians.

Meridians are lines of constant longitude that run from pole to pole. The Earth's rotation axis provides the primary reference points. The poles are where this axis intersects the surface. The Equator is a great circle. It is formed by a plane perpendicular to the rotation axis. The latitude of any point is the angle between the equatorial plane and the normal to the surface. On a perfect sphere, this normal is simply the radial vector from the center.

Certain latitudes hold special significance due to the Earth's axial tilt. This tilt is the angle between the ecliptic and the equatorial plane.

The ecliptic is the plane of Earth's orbit around the Sun. Because of this tilt, four specific parallels are named. The Arctic Circle is at 66° 34′ N. The Antarctic Circle is at 66° 34′ S. The Tropic of Cancer is at 23° 26′ N. The Tropic of Capricorn is at 23° 26′ S. These lines help define different climate zones. For example, at the December solstice, the Sun is overhead at the Tropic of Capricorn.

This causes different day and night lengths at different latitudes.

In reality, the Earth is not a perfect sphere. It is an oblate ellipsoid of revolution. This means it is slightly flattened at the poles and bulges at the equator. Isaac Newton proved this in 1687 in his work, *Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica*.

He showed that a rotating fluid body in equilibrium takes this shape. Geodesy is the science that studies the Earth's shape and its gravitational field. To map the Earth, scientists use two levels of abstraction. First, they model the physical surface as a geoid.

Geoida

The geoid approximates mean sea level across the oceans and land. Second, they approximate the geoid with a mathematically simpler reference surface, like an ellipsoid.

Because the Earth is an ellipsoid, we must distinguish between different types of latitude. Geodetic latitude is the most common type used in English texts. It is the angle between the equatorial plane and the normal to the surface.

On an ellipsoid, this normal line does not always pass through the center of the Earth. Geocentric latitude is different. It is the angle between the equatorial plane and the radius connecting the center to the point.

This distinction is important for high-precision work. Without knowing the specific reference ellipsoid, coordinates can be ambiguous or even meaningless.

Modern technology relies on these precise mathematical models. The Global Positioning System, or GPS, requires highly accurate coordinate systems.

GPS devices typically use a specific reference ellipsoid called WGS84. This ellipsoid is centered at the Earth's center of mass. Its equatorial radius is exactly 6,378,137 meters. Its inverse flattening is exactly 298.257223563. Because different agencies use different ellipsoids, software must perform datum transformations. This allows a GPS handset to link WGS84 to local maps accurately.

Latitude connects geometry, physics, and daily navigation. It allows us to move from simple spherical models to complex ellipsoidal ones. This progression is necessary to account for the Earth's actual shape and gravity. Whether using celestial navigation or satellite technology, understanding latitude is essential. It turns a vast, irregular planet into a structured grid that we can navigate with confidence. From the frozen poles to the tropical center, latitude tells us exactly where we stand in the world.
