Latitude is a way to name a specific spot on Earth.

It tells us how far north or south a place is. These lines are called parallels because they run east to west. They wrap around the planet like rings.

They never cross each other. Every point on Earth has its own latitude. This helps us understand where things are located on our world.

To find a spot, we use a system of angles. The Equator is the starting line at 0 degrees. The North Pole is the highest point at 90 degrees North. The South Pole is at 90 degrees South.

We often use latitude and longitude together. This pair of numbers works like a secret code for a location. For example, a lighthouse might have a specific set of numbers. This helps sailors and pilots find their way safely.

Some special lines have their own names. The Arctic Circle is far to the north. The Antarctic Circle is far to the south.

There are also two tropical lines. The Tropic of Cancer is in the north. The Tropic of Capricorn is in the south. These lines are linked to how the Earth tilts. This tilt changes how much sunlight different places get. It even changes how long the days and nights are.

Earth is not a perfect, smooth ball. It is actually an ellipsoid. This means it is a bit flat at the top and bottom.

Isaac Newton proved this long ago in 1687. Because the shape is not a perfect sphere, math gets a bit tricky. Scientists use a model called a geoid to show the real surface.

They also use a reference ellipsoid to make math easier. This helps tools like GPS work with great care.

Today, we use these numbers every single day. GPS devices in our phones use these systems.

They use a special model called WGS84. This model helps satellites find your exact position. Without these math rules, maps would not be very helpful. We rely on these invisible lines to travel the globe. It is a clever way to organize our big, round world.
