Lars Johan Hierta was a prominent Swedish newspaper publisher and social critic. He was also a businessman and a politician during the 19th century. Many historians consider him the "father of the free press" in Sweden. This title comes from his constant struggle for political and social reform. He used his various roles to advocate for major changes in Swedish society.

Hierta's career followed a path from law and government to media and industry. He began his professional life in the legal and administrative sectors. In 1821, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy and a Candidate of Law degree. He started as an unpaid trainee at the Bergskollegium, a central government agency. By 1825, he had earned a promotion to the position of law clerk. He also served as a secretary at the Swedish House of Lords during the Riksdag of the Estates of 1823.

His work in the media evolved through several distinct stages of writing. He first began writing for the newspaper Conservationsbladet in 1823. He then moved into different styles of writing for other publications. From 1824 to 1826, he wrote for a paper called Argus. He also wrote for the Stockholmsposten between 1826 and 1828. At first, he worked as a humorist writing funny pieces. Later, he transitioned into a news writer and a political editorialist.

In 1830, Hierta reached a major milestone by founding the newspaper Aftonbladet. This newspaper became a powerful tool for the liberal opposition in Sweden. He used the publication to advocate for a republic, even though he did not use that specific word. This work is often seen as the beginning of the Swedish republican movement. The government frequently tried to stop his influence. The newspaper was banned many times by authorities. However, Hierta would simply publish the paper again under a different name each time.

Hierta was also a successful entrepreneur who expanded into book publishing and manufacturing. In 1829, he established his own book publishing house called Hiertas bokförlag. He later entered the industrial sector in 1839. That year, he founded a candle factory known as Liljeholmens Stearinfabriks AB. This business was a significant part of his commercial success. Remarkably, the factory remains active today.

His leadership at Aftonbladet also created new opportunities for others in the workforce. Shortly after 1840, the newspaper hired the writer and feminist Wendela Hebbe. Hebbe became the first woman to hold a permanent position as a journalist at a Swedish newspaper. Both Hierta and Hebbe were very active in supporting liberal causes. Hierta's influence extended through his professional connections and his business ventures.

By the time of his death in Stockholm in 1872, Hierta was one of the wealthiest people in Sweden. His legacy continued through the charitable actions of his widow, Wilhelmina Fröding Hierta. She donated 100,000 SEK to Stockholm University to create a professorship in economics. She also provided 400,000 SEK to the foundation named Lars Hiertas minne. This foundation was created to work freely and independently for human progress.
