We call them Lantian Man. Scientists found their remains in Lantian County. They found a jawbone in 1963. Later, they found a part of a skull.

These fossils are very old. One part is about 700,000 years old. The other part is much older. It is about 1.6 million years old. This makes them some of the oldest humans in East Asia. They lived in mild grasslands near mountains. Many animals lived there too, like giant pandas and elephants.

Lantian Man had a unique look. They had thick bones and heavy brow ridges. A brow ridge is the bony part above the eyes. Their foreheads were low. Their brains were small. The Gongwangling skull had a brain size of 780 cc. This is smaller than the brains of modern humans.

They were also good at making tools.

They used local stones to make heavy tools. They made handaxes and cleavers. A cleaver is a tool used for cutting. These tools helped them in their daily lives.
