Langfang has a long and busy history. In the year 1900, there was a fight called the Battle of Langfang. During this time, Chinese forces were victorious against European forces. Later, the area saw another big event during the Second Sino-Japanese War. In the summer of 1938, a large uprising happened in the region. This was called the Jidong People's Anti-Japanese Armed Uprising. It was a very large and important movement during World War II. This history shows how much the land has changed over time.
Today, the city is a place for work and new ideas. Many people work with computers, technology, and making things. There is a huge place called the Oriental University City. It cost 4 billion yuan to build and started in 1999. About 50,000 students go to some of the universities there. Langfang is also home to two big national oil and gas companies. Langfang is a prefecture-level city located in Hebei Province, China. It occupies a vital position roughly midway between the major cities of Beijing and Tianjin. The city covers a total land area of approximately 6,429 square kilometers. This makes it the smallest prefecture-level city in Hebei Province by land size. Because of its location, it serves as a key link between these massive urban centers.
The geography of Langfang is defined by several major natural landmarks. To the north, the Yanshan Mountains rise up. The Taihang Mountains sit to the west of the city. To the east, the land meets the Bohai Sea. The southern part of the region consists of the vast North China Plain. The city is divided into several administrative parts. It governs two districts, two cities, five counties, and one autonomous county. It also manages 44 towns, 110 townships, and 3,228 administrative villages. An interesting feature is the "Northern Three Counties" exclave. This part includes Sanhe City, Xianghe County, and Dachang Hui Autonomous County. This area is separated from the rest of the province and sits between Beijing and Tianjin.
Langfang has a complex relationship with its environment and air quality. In 2013, the city faced severe air pollution problems. It was ranked among the 10 worst cities in China for air pollution. This issue is caused by how wind moves pollutants across the region. Pollutants from the Shanxi Plateau and cities like Beijing and Tianjin are carried by wind belts. These winds move in front of the Taihang Mountains. Because of the leeward slope terrain of these mountains, pollutants often converge here. This creates a buildup of particles in the Hebei Plain. This atmospheric process makes managing the local environment a significant challenge.
The history of Langfang includes several major military events. On June 26, 1900, the Battle of Langfang took place during the Boxer Movement. During this battle, Chinese forces stopped European forces heading toward Beijing. The Chinese forces were victorious and forced the others to turn back to Tianjin. The region also saw significant action during the Second Sino-Japanese War. In the summer of 1938, the Jidong People's Anti-Japanese Armed Uprising occurred. This happened on the fertile land near the Luan River. This uprising was the largest and most widespread in territory during that period of resistance. It had a massive impact on the history of World War II.
Today, the population of Langfang is quite large. According to the 2020 census, the population was 5,464,087 people. About 1,147,591 of those people lived in the built-up metro area. This metro area is formed by the Anci and Guangyang districts. By the end of 2024, the resident population was recorded at 5.469 million. The economy is heavily focused on technology, manufacturing, and computers. Langfang is also a hub for the energy sector. Two national oil and gas companies are based here. These are the China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau and the ENN Group. The city is also working on digital industrialization and the digital economy.
Education and specialized development zones are major parts of the city. The Oriental University City is a massive project that began in 1999. It involved a 4-billion yuan investment. Today, about 50,000 students are enrolled in various universities there. There is also the Langfang Export Processing Zone, or Langfang EPZ. This is a special area approved by the State Council in 2005. It is the only state-level development zone in the city.
