Lamiales is a large group of flowering plants.

Scientists say it has about 23,810 species. These plants grow all over the world. You can find them in forests and grasslands. They even grow in frozen areas.

Many plants in this group are useful to people. We use herbs like mint, basil, and rosemary for food. Some plants make scents for perfumes. Others make dyes to color things. For example, people in Sardinia use a plant called lavender to make green dye.

Some plants in this group act in special ways. Some are carnivorous plants that eat bugs.

Others are parasitic plants. These plants live on other plants to get what they need.

Many species can also help us stay healthy. They have special parts called alkaloids and saponins. These can help with things like a cold or flu. Some plants can even help keep away bugs that carry diseases. This makes them a great way to make natural sprays to stop pests.

Scientists call this group the mint order. It is a very important part of the plant world. There are about 23,810 different species in this group. These plants belong to 24 different families. You can find them growing almost anywhere on Earth. They live in forests, valleys, and even frozen areas.

Many of these plants have very specific ways they grow. Most have stems that are either soft or woody. Their flowers often have a special shape called zygomorphic. This means the flower has a top lip and a bottom lip. The top lip usually has two petals. The bottom lip usually has three petals. These plants also have tiny hairs called glandular hairs. Some plants in this group are even carnivorous.

Scientists have spent a long time studying how these plants are related. In the past, the group was much smaller. It used to include families like Boraginaceae. However, new research changed how we group them. The Lamiales now include many other groups like the former Scrophulariales. This makes the Lamiales a much larger group than before. Experts use the APG IV system to classify them today. This system helps us understand how the plants evolved.

Finding out exactly when these plants began is a hard job. A study from 2004 estimated they started 106 million years ago. Another study in 2009 gave a different number. That study estimated the group is 80 million years old. Scientists find it difficult to solve this mystery perfectly. Many different species have very unique traits. For example, the family Acanthaceae has special parts in its leaves. These parts can be toxic to insect larvae. This helps the plant protect itself from being eaten.

Humans use Lamiales plants in many parts of daily life. We use herbs like basil, mint, and rosemary for cooking. Some plants like lavender are used for lovely scents. Even trees like ash and teak come from this group. Some species have alkaloids and saponins to help us. These can help with a cold, the flu, or asthma. People in Sardinia even use lavender to make green dye. This shows how much we rely on these amazing plants.

The Lamiales are a massive order of flowering plants. Scientists often call them the mint order. They belong to the asterids clade within the Eudicots. This group is incredibly diverse and widespread. Under the APG IV classification system, the order contains 24 different families. It includes about 23,810 species and 1,059 genera. You can find these plants in almost every habitat on Earth. They grow in forests, valleys, and grasslands. They also live in rainforests, marshes, and even frozen areas.

Most Lamiales plants have very specific physical features. They are eudicots with either herbaceous or woody stems. A common feature is zygomorphic flowers. This term means the flowers have bilateral symmetry. These flowers usually have five petals. They often form an upper lip with two petals and a lower lip with three petals. Some species have actinomorphic flowers, which are radially symmetrical. These plants may have five stamens, but they are often reduced to two or four. They also produce a single style attached to an ovary. This ovary usually contains two carpels and is mostly superior. Many species also have glandular hairs on their surfaces.

Within this order, plants have developed very different ways to survive. Some species are carnivorous, meaning they catch and eat small animals. The families Lentibulariaceae and Byblidaceae include carnivorous plants. Other members, like those in the Martyniaceae family, are protocarnivorous. Some Lamiales are also parasitic. This means they live on or derive nutrients from other plants. The family Orobanchaceae contains these parasitic species. They can be hemi-parasites or holoparasites.

Understanding the history of Lamiales is a complex task for scientists. In the past, the order had a much more restricted circumscription. For example, Arthur Cronquist included families like Lamiaceae and Verbenaceae. The Dahlgren classification system placed them in the superorder Lamiiflorae. Recent phylogenetic work, which studies evolutionary relationships, has changed everything. Research shows the Lamiales are polyphyletic compared to the order Scrophulariales. Because of this, the two groups are now combined. This new, larger group also includes the former orders Hippuridales and Plantaginales. The name Lamiales is now the preferred term for this combined group. The placement of the Boraginaceae family remains unclear.

Scientists are still working to date the exact age of the Lamiales lineage. This is a difficult problem to solve. A study in 2004 used molecular phylogenetic dating to estimate their age. That study suggested a stem lineage of 106 million years. However, a similar study in 2009 provided a different estimate. That study suggested the lineage was 80 million years old. Another study in 2009 explained why these dates are so hard to determine. Determining the exact timing of plant evolution requires very precise data.

Humans rely on Lamiales for many essential things. Many species are economically important for food and medicine. We use aromatic herbs like basil, mint, rosemary, and sage. Other culinary plants include oregano, thyme, and marjoram. Some species provide wood, such as ash and teak. Others are used for decoration, like lilacs and jasmine. Many plants in this order produce medicinal compounds. These include alkaloids and saponins. These substances can help treat infections, asthma, or the flu. They also possess antioxidant properties.

These plants also play a role in protecting environments. Some species can repel insects. This can help control diseases like malaria, which is spread by mosquitoes. The family Acanthaceae is especially interesting in this regard. Their mature leaves contain bioactive secondary metabolites. These chemicals are toxic to insect larvae. Because of this, botanical insecticides derived from these plants are useful. They are inexpensive and abundant. They are also safer for the environment and non-target organisms than synthetic chemicals. Even the color of these plants is useful. In Sardinia, people use Lavandula stoechas to create a light-green natural dye.
