There is even a small piece of land in the water. An old church sits there.

Long ago, the water level went down. People used the water for power. This made the lake too small.

Then, people built long tunnels. These tunnels bring new water to the lake. Now, the water is rising again.

People love to visit the blue water. You can swim or play on the beach. It is a special place to visit.

In the past, the water level went down. People used the water for power and farms. This made the lake much smaller. To help, people built two long tunnels.

It sits high up in the Gegharkunik Province. This huge freshwater lake is part of the Caucasus region. It is also one of the largest Alpine lakes in Eurasia. The lake is a very important part of the land. Many people call it the "jewel" of Armenia. It is even recognized as a national treasure.

The lake works as a massive water source for the country. It is fed by 28 different rivers and streams. Most of the water that comes in actually evaporates into the air. Only about 10% of the water leaves through the Hrazdan River. This water is very useful for many things. It provides 90% of the fish in Armenia. It also provides 80% of the crayfish caught in the country.

The history of the lake has seen big changes. In the 1930s, engineers began using the water for power. They wanted to use it for farms and electricity. This caused the water level to drop very quickly. The volume of the water even fell by more than 40%. This was a hard time for the lake's environment. To fix this, leaders decided to build two long tunnels.

These tunnels were a major project to save the lake. The first tunnel, the Arpa-Sevan tunnel, was finished in 1981. It brings water from the Arpa River into the lake. Later, the Vorotan-Arpa tunnel was completed in 2004. These tunnels help the water level rise again. Since the mid-2000s, the water has been coming back. The level is expected to keep rising for many years.

Many people love to visit Lake Sevan for fun. It has the only beaches in all of Armenia. People go there to swim, sail, or sunbathe. Some people visit the Sevanavank monastery on the peninsula. This place used to be a real island. The lake has many different names in history. Some people called it the "blue lake" or "sweet lake."

The lake functions through a complex water cycle. It is fed by 28 different rivers and streams. However, most of this incoming water does not stay in the lake. About 90% of the water evaporates into the atmosphere. Only about 10% of the incoming water is drained away by the Hrazdan River. This balance is essential for maintaining the lake's volume and depth.

Historically, the lake has had many different names. In classical antiquity, it was known as Lychnitis. During the 17th century, explorer John Chardin called it the "Lake of Erivan." He noted that Persians called it "Deria-Shirin," meaning "sweet lake." Turkic names like Gokcha, meaning "blue lake," were also used. Some scholars believe the name Sevan comes from the Urartian word "suinia," which means "lake."

During the Soviet period, humans changed the lake significantly. In the 1930s, authorities began using the water for industrial goals. They wanted to provide irrigation for the Ararat plain. They also wanted to generate hydroelectric power. Engineers deepened the Hrazdan riverbed and bored a tunnel under the lake. This allowed water to flow out more easily. Consequently, the water level dropped by about 19 meters. The volume of the water also decreased by more than 40%. This caused the water quality to drop and destroyed natural habitats.

To stop this decline, leaders decided to divert new water into the lake. They planned to build large tunnels to bring water from highland rivers. The first project was the Arpa-Sevan tunnel. This tunnel was completed in 1981. It brings up to 300 cubic meters of water to Sevan every year. Later, the Vorotan-Arpa tunnel was built. It was inaugurated on April 26, 2004. This tunnel brings an additional 180 cubic meters of water to the lake annually.

These engineering projects have helped the lake recover. Since the mid-2000s, the water level has been rising significantly. In 2007, reports showed the level rose by 2 meters in six years. The water level reached 1900.44 meters in November 2019. The government forecasts that the level will continue to rise. However, climate change might affect this. It is estimated that the outflow of the Arpa River could decrease by 22% by 2030.

Lake Sevan is vital to the Armenian economy today. It provides about 90% of the fish in Armenia. It also provides 80% of the country's crayfish catch. The lake is a major center for tourism and recreation. It has the only beaches in Armenia. People visit to swim, sunbathe, and participate in sports like windsurfing or sailing.

Cultural sites around the lake attract many visitors. The Sevanavank monastery sits on a peninsula. This area was a major island until the mid-20th century. There are also other important sites like the Hayravank monastery. In the village of Noratus, there is a field of khachkars, which are stone crosses. The lake remains a central part of Armenian life, culture, and history.
