A laboratory is a special place for science.

It provides controlled settings for research and experiments. Scientists use these spaces to make measurements and test new ideas. You can find labs in many different settings. They are in schools and universities for learning. They are also in hospitals, clinics, and government centers. Some labs are even found on ships or in spacecraft.

How a lab works depends on the scientist. A physics lab might use a vacuum chamber. A metallurgy lab has tools to test the strength of metals. Chemists and biologists often work in a wet laboratory. These scientists use liquid tools to study things. A psychologist might use a room with one-way mirrors. This helps them observe how people behave. Computer scientists use supercomputers to run simulations or study data. Engineers use labs to design and build new tools.

Labs have a very long history. The earliest lab was a home lab used by Pythagoras of Samos. He used it to study sound tones and vibrating strings. In the 16th century, an underground alchemical lab was found in Prague. This lab was called Speculum Alcemiae. It was believed to belong to Emperor Rudolf II. In the 19th century, scientists began working in teams. During World War II, the era of "Big Science" began. This made labs much larger and added huge machines like particle accelerators.

Many tools help scientists gather data.

Common items include beakers and reagent bottles. Scientists also use microscopes and Bunsen burners. Some tools are very large and are called scientific instruments. A centrifuge or a spectrophotometer are examples of these. Labs must also be safe places to work. They can have hazards like poisons or moving machinery.

To stay safe, labs use special equipment like eyewash stations. In the United States, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration helps set rules for chemical safety.

Today, many labs are working to be more sustainable. This means they try to help the Earth. Research labs can use a lot of energy. For example, fume hoods use a lot of power to move air. Some labs at the University of Edinburgh work to reduce their impact. They use sensors to turn off machines when they are not needed. They also recycle waste to save energy. This helps the world stay healthy while they discover new things.
