Centrifuge

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A centrifuge is a special machine that uses spinning to separate things. It works by using centrifugal force, which is an outward push. This force helps separate parts of a liquid based on their density. Density is a measure of how heavy something is for its size.

When a machine spins, denser or heavier items move toward the outside. At the same time, lighter items move toward the center. This makes the centrifuge a very useful tool for many jobs. It can even act as a filter to remove tiny bits of waste.

To understand how it works, imagine a container of liquid spinning very fast. As the container rotates, the centrifugal force pushes on everything inside. Denser particles move outward in a radial direction, which means they move away from the center. In a lab tube, these heavy particles settle at the bottom. Meanwhile, the less dense substances rise to the top.

This step-by-step movement allows scientists to see each part clearly. Some machines spin so fast they are called ultracentrifuges, which can separate even tiny molecules.

People have been using spinning tools for a long time. An English engineer named Benjamin Robins invented a whirling arm tool in the 1700s. Later, in 1864, Antonin Prandtl had an idea for a dairy machine. His brother, Alexander Prandtl, improved that design to separate cream from milk.

He even showed off a working machine for extracting butterfat in 1875. Today, we use many different types of rotors to control the spin. Some rotors hold tubes at a fixed angle, while others have hinges that let them swing out.

Centrifuges are used in many different places around the world. In medical labs, they separate blood into cells and proteins.

They are also used in dairies to separate cream from milk.

Some very large machines are used to train pilots. These human centrifuges simulate high gravity so pilots can prepare for flight. The US Air Force uses a centrifuge at Brooks City Base in Texas for this training. Even the Large Diameter Centrifuge in the Netherlands can expose samples to 20 times Earth's gravity.

You might see the idea of a centrifuge in your own home. A washing machine uses spinning to pull water out of your clothes.

In industry, large machines help process waste or manufacture goods. Some centrifuges are even used to separate isotopes for nuclear fuel. There are also low-cost versions that people can 3-D print for about $25. Whether it is a tiny lab tool or a huge machine for astronauts, spinning helps us sort the world.
