Léon Foucault was a French physicist. He lived from 1819 to 1868. He loved to study how the world works.

He is famous for the Foucault pendulum. This is a heavy weight that swings on a long string. He hung one from the roof of a building in Paris. As it swung, the path of the swing seemed to change. This showed that the Earth rotates on its axis. Many people came to watch this amazing sight.

Foucault also studied light. He used a spinning mirror to measure its speed. He found that light moves slower in water than in air. He also named the gyroscope. A gyroscope is a tool used to show how things spin.

He helped make better tools for looking at stars. He made a test to check telescope mirrors. This test is still used today. He also found a way to look at the sun safely. He used a thin film of silver on a glass lens. This keeps your eyes from getting hurt by the sun.
