Baum's life was full of many different jobs and adventures. He grew up in Chittenango, New York, on a large estate called Rose Lawn. As a young boy, he started writing his own little journals. He even started a stamp dealership with his friends when he was 17. Later, he spent time raising Hamburg chickens. He even wrote a book called The Book of the Hamburgs in 1886. These many experiences helped him learn how to tell great stories.

He also had a deep love for the theater and performing. Baum tried many times to bring his stories to the stage. In 1880, his father built him a theater in Richburg, New York. Baum wrote plays and even composed music for them. One of his plays, The Maid of Arran, was a musical success. Sadly, a fire destroyed his theater and many of his scripts. Even after hard times, he never stopped trying to reach the stage.

In 1900, Baum published The Wonderful Wizard of Oz with illustrator W. W. Denslow.

This book became a huge success for two years. A musical version of the story opened on Broadway in 1903. This play was very popular and toured the whole country. It featured actors playing the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow. The play was so famous that people started calling it "The Wizard of Oz." This shorter name is what most people use today.

Baum's ideas were often very ahead of his time. He wrote about things that seem common now but were new then. His stories hinted at things like wireless telephones and even laptop computers. He also wrote about women in active, high-risk jobs. He spent his final years trying to start a film studio in Los Angeles.
