He was born as Lê Văn Nhuận in Quảng Trị Province. His family was quite poor. Some people say his parents collected scrap metal and worked as blacksmiths. As a young man, he worked as a clerk for a railway company. This job helped him meet many people who shared his ideas. He learned about new ways to change society during this time.

Lê Duẩn worked hard to rise in his political party.

He helped start the Indochina Communist Party in 1930. Because of his work, he was sent to prison twice. He was first held from 1931 to 1937. Later, he was arrested again in 1939 for starting an uprising. He was finally released after the August Revolution of 1945. He then became a close helper to the leader Hồ Chí Minh.

He became a top leader during a time of great change.
