It helps many people move across the city every day. Today, the system has three lines and 52 different stations. These stations are spread across ten districts in the city. In 2016, about 1.32 million people rode the metro each day. This was a huge part of how people traveled in Kyiv.

Building the tunnels was a very hard job. Workers had to drill through many different types of ground. Sometimes they found unexpected water deep underground. This water caused problems, especially at the Arsenalna station. Even though it was deep, the station faced constant flooding. Arsenalna is actually the second deepest station in the whole world.

People first thought about an underground railway in 1884. A man named Dmytro Andrievskiy suggested a plan back then. Later, an engineer named Papazov created a new project in 1936. Many years passed with many different plans and ideas. The city also went through a big war. After the war ended, the government finally ordered the construction to start.

Construction of the first line began in earnest in 1949. In 1952, there was even a contest to design the stations. The winners used beautiful materials like granite and marble. The first five stations were Vokzalna, Universytet, Khreshchatyk, Arsenalna, and Dnipro.

On November 6, 1960, the first five stations finally opened. Two men, Alexey Semagin and Ivan Vynogradov, ran the first test.

Moving the trains was tricky at the very start. There was no permanent place to keep the trains. Workers used a temporary depot near the Dnipro station. They even had to use a crane to move them! Later, they built a permanent depot at Darnytsia. This allowed trains to move easily from the railway to the metro.
