Kwajalein Atoll is a huge group of islands in the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

It sits in the Ralik Chain, which is southwest of Honolulu, Hawaii. The atoll is made of 97 different islands and islets. These islands form a large ring around a massive lagoon. This lagoon is one of the biggest in the whole world.

The land area of the atoll is just over 10 square kilometers. Most of the islands are very low to the sea. On average, they sit only about 2 meters above the water.

This amazing place started with volcanoes deep under the ocean. Between 165 and 76 million years ago, lava built up from the seabed. This caused the land to rise up through the waves. Then, about 56 million years ago, coral began to grow around the edges. Over a very long time, the original volcanic land sank down. This left behind a ring of coral that we call an atoll today.

The water temperature here stays around 28 degrees Celsius. On the ocean side, the water is very clear to see through.

History has shaped how people use these islands today. During World War II, the U.S. Navy set up a base on Kwajalein Island. The German cruiser Prinz Eugen also ended up here after nuclear tests in 1946.

In the late 1950s, the U.S. Army took over the base for missile work. They used the area for the Nike Zeus program. Now, much of the atoll is part of the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site. This site uses many radars and tracking cameras to watch the skies.

Many different people live and work across the atoll. Kwajalein Island is the largest and southernmost island.

About 1,000 people live there, mostly U.S. civilian workers. Ebeye is another very important island in the atoll.

It is a busy Marshallese island-city with shops and a port. Ebeye is one of the most crowded places on Earth. About 13,000 people live on its small area of land. Many Marshallese people also work at the military bases.

The atoll is a vital link for modern technology. One of the five ground stations for the GPS system is located here. This helps people all over the world find their way using satellites.

Some islands are also used to launch rockets into space. For example, SpaceX used Omelek Island to launch Falcon 1 rockets.

Other islands, like Meck, are used to test different types of missiles. This makes the atoll a very busy and important place for science.
